FAQ

Materials & What They Mean

What does "316L and 304L stainless steel" mean in jewellery and why is it good?

316L and 304L stainless steel is a high‑grade alloy known for excellent resistance to rust, tarnish and corrosion. It contains elements like molybdenum, which help keep it durable even when exposed to water, sweat or humidity. This makes it ideal for everyday wear and more resilient than many lower‑grade metals used in jewellery.

What is PVD gold plating and how is it different from traditional gold plating?

PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) is a high‑tech coating process that bonds gold particles to the jewellery at a molecular level in a vacuum chamber. The result is a much harder, more wear‑resistant gold finish than traditional electroplating, which simply lays gold onto a surface. PVD on 316L steel is designed to resist scratches, water, sweat and tarnish far better than standard gold plating.

Is PVD gold plating "real gold"?

Yes, Kalakaar Jewellery uses genuine 14ct or 18ct gold in the PVD process, which gives the jewellery its real gold colour and tone. However, unlike solid gold pieces, the gold layer is a thick molecular coating bonded to the stainless steel base. The piece is not solid gold throughout but still gives an authentic gold finish at a more accessible price point.

How is PVD different from "gold filled" jewellery?

Gold filled jewellery has a much thicker layer of gold (mechanically bonded) incorporating actual gold content by weight. PVD's gold layer is thinner but molecularly bonded and extremely durable, especially on stainless steel. Both have advantages; PVD offers excellent everyday wear resistance combined with hypoallergenic benefits.

Is Kalakaar Jewellery hypoallergenic?

Yes. Because we use high grade stainless steel with PVD gold plating, the jewellery is largely hypoallergenic and suitable for sensitive skin. The metal and plating resist nickel and other irritants that can trigger reactions in some people.

Wear, Durability & Everyday Use

Can I shower, swim or exercise with my Kalakaar Jewellery on?

Yes. PVD‑coated stainless steel is inherently water‑ and sweat‑resistant, making it suitable for everyday activities including showers and workouts. There's no need to remove pieces daily due to water contact alone. However, for prolonged chemical exposure (e.g., chlorinated pools or harsh cleaning agents), we recommend rinsing and drying your jewellery after use.

Will the gold colour fade or wear off?

PVD gold is engineered to be more durable than conventional plating and typically maintains colour and shine for years of regular wear with proper care. Over time and with heavy friction (such as bracelets rubbing on surfaces), some natural wear can occur. This is normal and care instructions are detailed in the Jewellery Care Guide.

Does PVD make jewellery waterproof?

PVD plating over stainless steel creates a water‑resistant finish that helps prevent rust and tarnish from exposure to water and sweat. This means you can confidently wear your jewellery in wet conditions without worrying about quick fading.

What metals are better for long‑lasting jewellery?

316L and 304L stainless steel with PVD plating is more resistant to corrosion and tarnishing than cheap base metals (like brass or low‑grade plated metals). While solid gold has intrinsic value, PVD stainless steel jewellery balances durability, hypoallergenic wear and affordability.

Care & Maintenance

How should I care for my PVD gold jewellery?

To keep your jewellery looking its best:

  • Rinse and dry after exposure to sweat or salt water.
  • Avoid direct contact with harsh chemicals (cleaning products, chlorine).
  • Store pieces separately to prevent scratching.

Will plating wear off if I wear it every day?

All coatings, including high‑quality PVD, can gradually show slight wear in high‑contact areas over many years. PVD is significantly more wear‑resistant than traditional gold plating, resisting scratches and corrosion for many years with proper care.

Warranty & Policies

Is plating wear covered under warranty?

Yes, plating issues such as premature fading or quality defects within the warranty period are handled per our Returns & Warranty Policy. Please refer to that policy for specific conditions and coverage details.

What's considered normal wear vs defect?

Normal wear includes minor surface scratches, slight thinning from friction over time, or damage from improper care. Manufacturing defects or premature plating failures are covered under our Warranty Policy.

Sizing, Fit & Comfort

Will these pieces suit sensitive skin?

Yes. The combination of 316L stainless steel and quality PVD gold plating is designed to be hypoallergenic, making many Kalakaar Jewellery pieces suitable for people with sensitive skin.

How do I choose the right length or size?

We provide sizing details on product pages. If you have specific fit concerns, our support team can help — contact us at info@kalakaarjewellery.com.

Is PVD gold plated jewellery worth it compared to solid gold?

PVD gold plated jewellery offers the appearance and feel of real gold with the added benefits of water resistance, corrosion resistance and hypoallergenic properties at a more affordable price. Solid gold retains metal value but can be softer and more prone to scratches in daily life.

Does PVD jewellery turn your skin green?

No. Because Kalakaar Jewellery uses nickel‑free 316L stainless steel and stable PVD plating, it is designed to not discolour your skin or cause the green tint typical of low‑cost metals.

How long does PVD last vs traditional gold plating?

PVD coatings are engineered to be up to 10 times more durable than conventional plating. While traditional gold plating may begin to show wear within months, high‑quality PVD finishes often hold up for several years before noticeable wear appears.
